Smoking is the greatest single cause of preventable
illness and death and kills 120,000 people each year in the UK. In
Leicester there are around 450 smoking related deaths each year. Men of 35
years who smoke will, on average, die seven years earlier than men who
have never been smokers. Women smokers of the same age will, on average,
die six years earlier than women who have never smoked.
